December 2007

The Golden Compass: released on December 7th. The story is based on  Philip Pullman's award winning novel and is the first of a "His Dark Materials" trilogy. This fantasy world melds
parallel universes, physics, metaphysics with witches, souls and talking bears.  The incredible cast includes Daniel Craig, Ian McShane, Sam Elliot and Nicole Kidman.
REVIEW: I loved this film. The story line was captivating, the characters interesting, it was fast paced and aesthetically pleasing (I personally dislike films which look and feel as it they
have been filmed in a depressing dark closet). The only downside was that it finished way too soon but I suppose the good news is that means that a sequel will follow.
Well worth the
ticket.

Nicholas Cage returns, with most of the original cast, as treasure hunter Ben Gates in National Treasure:Book of Secrets. Story: Ben sets out to defend the good name of his great-great
grandfather when a missing page from John Wilkes Booth's diary implicates him in the death of Abraham Lincoln. Following the clues involves a fast paced, exciting journey to Europe
before Ben and his cohorts return to America to uncover history's most incredible treasured secrets. Harvey Keitel, Ed Harris and Helen Mirren join the original cast of National Treasure to
provide a great action packed released just in time for Christmas.
REVIEW: Great movie. Plot was well constructed. Yes a little of what we had seen in the previous film but not too much that it was National Treasure re-visited. It was good news that the
original cast returned and with the superb acting talents of Helen Mirren, Ed Harris and Harvey Keitel managed to elevate this film to even greater heights It was a joy to watch as the
scenes actually allowed you to focus before whizzing you off in a different direction. Several of today's directors take so many quick split shots in rapid succession that you feel exhausted
from the sheer task of keeping tabs on the action. This film was definitely worth the ticket.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Animated film. Jason Lee. December 14th.

Sweeney Todd: Demon Butcher of Fleet Street. Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman. December 21st.

Charlie Wilson's War: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Phillip Seymour Hoffman. December 25th
