Irish Musings
Having recently moved home we needed
to buy some curtain rails, so we drove into
the town nearest to us which is
Templemore in County Tipperary.
We went into the hardware store known
as Doherty's thinking that we would be in
and out quickly.
The assistant said " Hello, how are you
doing?"
I replied that I was fine and that I wanted
to buy some curtain rails.
"Ah well now" she said after a deep sigh.
"There could be a problem getting doughs.
You see, we know where they are, but I
don't tink you could have them today!"
I realise that living in Ireland is a learning
curve and nothing ever surprises me.
"Yes", she continued, "De rails are in the
shop over the other side of the road."
Well of course, they would be! So off we
go to the shop opposite, also called
Doherty's.
I ask the elderly man behind the counter
has he any curtain rails? He said he had
but did I need anything else?"
" Well," I said "I really just wanted the
rails for the moment".
"Do you know how old I am?", the elderly
man asks.
"No, not a clue", I reply.
"I'm 88", he announces with glee."And I
work here full-time".
"Good for you", I say. "Would you know
if you have any curtain rails?"
"Yes, we have. We have indeed."
"Could I see them", I ask directly.
"Would ye be able to come back
tomorrow?", he asks me. "Doughs rails are
in de back somewhere. I will have to have
a bit of hunt to find them!", he informs me
with a wide grin.
I thanked him for his trouble and said I
would have to be getting home.
The old man kissed my hand and said he
would definitely try to find the rails.
We drove another 22 miles to the next
town and bought the rails at a department
store.
I had forgotten all about Mr Doherty until
driving through Templemore a few weeks
later. As I glanced into the shop I spotted
Mr Doherty behind the counter and there
in the middle of the shop window,in all
their glory was a huge mountain of curtain
rails!
Bless him, he had found them and was
obviously keen to make a sale!

Defining Limerickman
By Michael Curtin
There is no more a
monolithic Limerickman
than there is a Dubliner
who hasn't read Ulysses
yet who is supposed to
be more Joycean than
Joyce himself. But
imagine that such a
superman of the Shannon
once existed and became
victim of a Big Bang and
is now diffused
throughout the city, his
gemlike qualities coated in
strata of ordinariness.
Consider the boiling pot
from which he came:
Viking, Dane, Norman,
English, Dutch, German,
Scottish;the milieu in
which the brew was
stirred: imperialist and
republican
godparents;and the
assorted ingredients that
were added: the pictures,
the music hall, the light
opera, sport, faith.
How can he be put
together again?
