Why rent a car?
Gone are the days when you arrived at a resort or city hotel and stayed there for
your entire vacation. Renting a car is most definitely the way to go. You miss so
much when you do not rent your own car and have the opportunity to discover
the 'real' area that you are visiting. Once you have checked the maps, spoken to
the locals to ascertain if there are any unknown pitfalls on your chosen route then
you can hit the open road. Before driving off though double check that you know
the correct side of the road on which you should be driving. Never a good thing
to overlook especially when you are tired, and half way down a tremendously
steep hill and suddenly remember that you are in England and a car heading
toward you at breakneck speed is not going to budge an inch as you are stupidly
on the wrong side.
The great part though of being independent and being able to explore on your
own is that you get a true feeling for the country and the people. The guided
tours and supervised excursions are great but they only skim the surface. There's
nothing like being able to discuss the wonderful café that you discovered in
Provence or the road less travelled to that quiet idyllic sandy beach. So next time
you travel don't forget to book your car. If you are confident of driving on arrival
make sure that your car rental company of choice is located actually in the airport.
They may charge a supplement tax for this convenience but it is well worth the
small extra cost.
If you are worried about being tired when you arrive then book the car for the
next day and arrange a pickup close to your hotel. Double check their location for
drop off and their terms and conditions regarding gas/petrol, mileage, county line
policy etc. Regarding insurance we would recommend that you accept the car
rental companies upgraded insurance or have in hand the best cover possible.
We have heard such horror stories when an accident has occurred that it is just
not worth the risk of cutting back on the best insurance. Also don't be afraid to
ask for someone to go through the controls of the car with you. There may be
something which is entirely different to any car that you have driven before and,
this relatively simple something, could be a potential headache when you are
miles away trying to find out how to open the gas tank or hood.
Remember your drivers licence and other important documents. Grab your map,
drive carefully and have a great time.
